Rapid HIV Testing Volunteer
Relevant Background Information:
The Sexual Health Centre (SHC) was founded in 1987 as Cork AIDS Alliance, to provide support to people living with HIV. Since 1997, SHC has been a leading organisation supporting and promoting sexual health in Ireland.
The Sexual Health Centre is working in partnership with HIV Ireland in Dublin, GOSHH in Limerick providing free Rapid HIV Tests to men who have sex with men. Know Now is a volunteer and peer led programme. Testing takes place monthly in a number of venues including The Loft sauna and Chambers Bar.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide rapid testing in a variety of outreach settings.
Collect data for each client testing.
Report to the Sexual Health Centre staff member on duty.
Essential Skills Required
Full training will be provided. An understanding of the importance of confidentiality is absolutely essential. Volunteers need to be able to engage with service users without judgement of sexual behaviours.
Desirable Skills Required:
Prospective volunteers should be friendly and outgoing.
Have an awareness of the factors that can have a negative impact on a person’s sexual health.
Objectives of the role
The sooner a person with HIV is aware of their HIV status the sooner they have access to treatments. The effectiveness of the treatments results in a longer life expectancy and better health outcomes for people with HIV.
Recent research estimates that approximately 30% of people do not know their HIV status. The Rapid Testing initiative allows more MSM the opportunity to know their status.
